• Dr. Jason Mallonee, DSW, LCSW-S

    Dr. Jason Mallonee is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New Mexico and Texas with Board-Approved Supervisor Status in Texas. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at The University of Texas at El Paso where he is spearheading the development and launch of the nation’s only online MSW program with a specialization in Social Work in the Border Region. He currently resides in Kea’au, Hawai’i.

    Leading up to his appointment at UTEP in 2020, he spent 2 years at New Mexico State University as a Field Coordinator, MSW Program Coordinator, and Assistant Professor. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Mallonee spent over 7 years in direct social work practice as a mental health clinician and program administrator working with individuals with more serious mental health conditions, survivors of sexual abuse and assault, children and adults in crisis, adolescents and adults with substance use disorders, LGBTQ individuals, and Veterans.

    After transitioning to academia full-time, Dr. Mallonee has continued engaging in social work practice through community engagement, providing clinical supervision, and program development, implementation, and evaluation. As a clinician and clinical supervisor, he specializes in assisting clinicians in training develop client-centered, recovery-oriented, and evidence-informed clinical social work practice skills. His areas of clinical expertise are in trauma treatment and supporting all clients in building healthy coping skills and making meaning from life’s challenges. He currently serves on the steering committee of the National Initiative for Trauma Education and Workforce Development.

    Dr. Mallonee approaches his clinical work and teaching from a broad perspective, having studied in several different fields. He received a BA in Visual Art from Oberlin College in 2001, earned an MA in Education from Antioch University in 2007, and earned an MSW from the University of Southern California in 2013. Dr. Mallonee earned a Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020. While studying at UPENN, he received the DR. Ram Cnaan Award for meritorious scholarship.

    Dr. Mallonee’s research is community-engaged and designed to solve real-world problems faced by communities and individuals. His areas of study and research include trauma-informed practice, mental health treatment and treatment disparities, help-seeking and treatment engagement, the therapeutic relationship, and more recently, grief, loss, and disability.
